L.C. Smith Model 8 - Dead mainspring

Agh... I need help... I got the LC Smith standard model 8 from the ski rental house (it's a long story) and now it won't work. I had got it to type only using a single screw driver, and a pocket knife, but when I went to inspect the escapment, it stopped working. I had disengaged the drawband from the mainspring because the carriage had stopped moving. Turns out it was the ribbon advancment being a bit wonky. So now the mainspring has zero tension, and the little rachet with a little handle won't move. So now I feel stupid with a broken mainspring. Please help...

I should probably say that whenever I turn it to the right, there is no tension that builds up like other mainsprings. I feel like there is a rather easy way of doing this, but I just can't figure it out.

A high schooler with a lot of typewriters. That's pretty much about it.
