Measurement of carriage widths or lengths.

On old standard machines which offered different carriage widths or lengths, how was the carriage measured? Platen rubber surface length? Over-all knob-to-knob? Platen surface of rubber plus any metal end caps? Some other way?

Wish I could be more active here because I'm really getting interested in typewriters, but this semester has been a real bear, studying for my finals is just taking up all of my time. It's terrible. My hands are itching to get busy with that big Royal!

Re: Measurement of carriage widths or lengths.

The answer to your question is the length of the rubber on the platen in inches.  It is confusing, because when people say that they have a 15" carriage typewriter, they really mean 15" platen.  There is another refinement to this - the writing line.  The length of the writing line is often less that the length of the platen.  So your hypothetical 15" carriage might only yield 14 1/2 inches of typed characters from side to side on the paper !
