Royal typewriter questions

I recently purchased a typewriter from a thrift store which appears to be in good working condition and as it's my first of this age (I believe from serial number dating it may be from 1931-32) I have some questions about it and was hoping to find some answers/guidance here.

Im assuming from the look of it and the age that it may be a Royal 10, but all of those I have seen pictures of are completely black and mine has a crackly gray top with black back/sides.  Im wondering if this has been refurbished?  Has anyone seen anything like this?  (Just realized I have to post twice to include pics)

Im wanting to give this a solid cleaning.  I removed the cover on the bottom and gingerly cleaned inside with a brush and the vacuum.  It didnt remove any build up but it certainly got a lot of dust and cobwebs out.  The rest of the machine, particularly the outer exposed metal parts (please forgive my lack of knowledge of these part names - Im learning!) could use a good scrubbing.  Im still doing research on the best method/materials for this but it seems some websites are in conflict with one another a bit. What would be best to clean the metal part of the paper holder and the margin stop bar?  Nooks and crannies around/on the various levers?

And also - I was looking at a manual for a Royal 10 and cant seem to figure out what the name or purpose of this bar I have attached to the margin stop bar is for.  Im including a photo of it for reference.  Any ideas what this does? I Assume it has something to do with margin guides??

Thanks in advance for any/all ideas.  This is a beautiful machine and I am really excited to get it cleaned up some more!

Re: Royal typewriter questions

It also has an SX serial number if that could make any difference or help understand why it may look slightly different (or not).

Do you mean the bar with the tabs in your last photo? Those are the manually set tab stops. You pull each individual tab of the bar and position it where you would like the carriage to stop when you use the tabulator.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Re: Royal typewriter questions

When you say the bar attached to the magin stop bar, are you talking about your third picture?  If so, those are the tab stops. You set them manually by moving the little clippy things to where you want each tab stop to be.

Uwe beat me to it.

Re: Royal typewriter questions

Oh, I see!!!!  Thank you!  It looks like there is a bit of stickiness in between some of the tab marks so I'll have to figure out how to get the glide bars cleaned up some more.

Any recommendations for the best way to clean that tab stop bar and the margin stop bar?

Re: Royal typewriter questions

That looks like a Royal 10, it may have been factory rebuilt (Like my remington), or, more likley, someone sent it to a dealer and got it customized.

Back from a long break.

Starting fresh with my favorite typer. A Royal Futura!

Re: Royal typewriter questions

A toothbrush works well to get those guys cleaned up.  Gets into the little crevices without leaving fluff or bits of cotton like a Q-tip would.  I used naptha to clean the ones on my Woodstock.  Probably best to avoid getting naptha or mineral spirits on the paint, though I haven't had any problems with it taking paint off (yet).

I've read that scrubbing bubbles works well on crinkle finishes, so you might give that a try for the textured painted parts.

Re: Royal typewriter questions

Yes, I'm pretty sure that is a refurbished/rebuilt, probably sometime in the late 30's to the early 40's but that's just my guess and I could be wrong. It's near identical to the one I got at a flea market a few weeks ago. Here's a comparison picture:

(Excuse the mess, this is a photo from when I was doing the initial clean-up because this one is te best visual)

And I can't say that I am very jealous of your typewriter because of that 'SX'. the 'SX' means that the shift mechanism is a basket/segment shift, meaning the typebars move down instead of the carriage moving up like other Royal 10's. I really wanted a basket shift, but it eluded me this time...

A high schooler with a lot of typewriters. That's pretty much about it.
