Royal Typewriter Acronyms

I saw a Royal KHM in a shop today and it got me wondering about Royal acronyms - what do they stand for?
Royal KHM
Royal KMM
Royal KMG
Royal FP
Royal HH
Royal RE (Royal Electric?)

Re: Royal Typewriter Acronyms

I'm not sure that they're actually acronyms, but model designations with modifiers instead. I've seen the letter K associated with 'key set' and 'keyboard', and the letter M with 'Magic Margin' (Royal's proprietary quick-set margin system), but I've not seen it explained in any detail. The best person around here to answer that question is probably dukedford. He was a service manager with Royal and possesses a wealth of knowledge; hopefully he'll see this thread and be able to supply a definitive answer to your question.

Re: Royal Typewriter Acronyms

Not that it really matters, but I don't think the "M" in "KHM" signifies "Magic Margin", considering that Royal was manufacturing KHM typewriters before they introduced the Magic Margin feature. I picked up a junker KHM a few weeks ago that was made in the mid 1930s, and it does indeed NOT have the Magic Margin. Looks like the Typewriter Database thinks the "M" in this case simply stands for "Model". So, KHM would be something like:

K (Keyset), HM (H-Model)

Still, it would be cool to know if any of that is actually correct. LOL.

Re: Royal Typewriter Acronyms

The Magic Margin system was introduced in 1938 and first appeared on the KMM. The KHM was manufactured from 1935 to 1938. As I previously mentioned, I'm sceptical about the serial number prefixes being acronyms and would like to get dukedford's take on it. One other association I forgot to list in my last post was that some interpret the G in KMG to mean "grey".

Re: Royal Typewriter Acronyms

I just found this information at Typewriter Database in the serial number listings:

"KHM" started at 1850000. Initals mean: K - Key Set, HM - H Model, DT - Keyset, KDTHM - H Model 5 key Keyset.

Argh! Sorry Retro-Z!  I accidentally scrolled past his post. I have been knee deep in a Royal KHM today and I think the PB Blaster fumes are starting to get to me

Re: Royal Typewriter Acronyms

I'm a little buzzed out on cleaning fluid fumes right now too, a real chemical cocktail of Varsol, rubber rejuvinator, and extra-strength Hertel. At the rate I'm killing off brain cells it might be that I'll only be able to operate a typewriter instead of a computer some day soon.

Royal KHM, Royal KMM, Royal KMG, Royal FP, Royal HH, Royal RE (Royal Electric?)

The Official designations and chronology for Royal standard typewriters were as follows:
Model 1 to 4 (1906 to 1911)
Model 5 to 8 (1912 to 1918)
Model 10 (1914 to 1938)
MM (1938 to 1952)
HH (1952 to 1956)
FP (1957 to 1962)
101 (1963 to 1965) Europe only model
MC Empress (1964 to 1966) North America
MC Empress (1965 to 1966) Europe
440 (1966 to 1968)

H, HM, KMM, KMG, etc. are not model types and do not describe any of the features on the typewriter. They are the NUMBER prefixes for the Model 10. The MM was the first typewriter with the Magic Margin. As far as I can remember, HH and FP were named after senior members of the Royal Management: HH was for Henry Heart (Vice President of Royal Typewriters from 1949 and a typewriter designer for Royal); and FP was for Fortune Peter Ryan (President of Royal Typewriters from 1951). F.P. Ryan was the grandson of Thomas Fortune Ryan, the financier of the Royal Typewriter Company in 1904. RE does mean Royal Electric.
