Oops. Typewriter bug bit me not once, not twice, not three times...

Oops. Typewriter bug bit me again, 4 TIMES! lol

First. Got a 1904? Smith Premier 4. How the heck do you find the serial numbers on these?
Second. A nice extra long carriage 1946 Remington KMC came free with the Smith Premier for free. Missing the return lever. Odd....
Third. A Smith Corona Coronet Super 10. Working.
Foruth. A dirty Royal Speed King. Two of the carriage levers have the top ripped off, but their metal...

Re: Oops. Typewriter bug bit me not once, not twice, not three times...

The serial numbers on these Smith-Premiers is in a tricky spot. They're in the front of the whole mangle of exposed bars. Here's a picture for reference:

I had to scrape off some rust to see the numbers, so clean it a little before searching elsewhere. (And the picture looks kinda creepy now that I'm looking at it. Gotta love one way lighting...).

Where did you get 4 machines, one being less common, in such a short amount of time?

Yup, I just noticed that when I flipped it over. Mine wasnt made in 1903 when the seller said, but 1903! Also, Can you PLEASE tell me about the mainspring on it? Mine doesnt have any tension unless you depress the little lever on it. It was locked up with grease until I degreased it.

Also, I was talking with this guy about it a month ago, and he started responding yesterday, and said he would throw in a typewriter from the 40s (The KMC). I also was emaling this person who was moving a week ago, and made plans to pick up a Royal Speed King, and an electric Smith Corona.

Re: Oops. Typewriter bug bit me not once, not twice, not three times...

Hmm... I'm not sure about the mainspring. To be quite honest, I haven't really touched it much since I got it back in April mostly due to the feed rollers which I need to replace but can't get off. But I'll see if there's an easy way to increase mainspring tension.

As for the ribbon, on my SP #2, it is held onto the spools by being pinned onto a piece of cloth that is attached to the spool themselves. You can't remove the spools (as far as I know, I'll check if that's true) so the only way to remove it it to un-pin the ribbon.

Re: Oops. Typewriter bug bit me not once, not twice, not three times...

I figured it out. You CAN remove the spools.

(Dont know if its the same on a #2...)

1. Pull out on little know next to crankshaft for ribbon.
2. Wiggle and pull out the crankshaft.
3.Take out spool.

I havent figured how to take the ribbon off the spool, so I just re inked it while on their. Its so cool to type on one of the blindstrikes.. lol

If anyone knows how to wind up one of the smith premier 4 mainsprings, please tell me.

Re: Oops. Typewriter bug bit me not once, not twice, not three times...

The last time the typewriter bug bit me only three times was 1981.  Since then, I believe in the last 35 years, I must have been bitten at least a thousand times with all the machines I'd bought over the years.  I still think that just about every typewriter that's run through my hometown in Texas was at least owned by me at one time or another.  Bitten by the typewriter bug??!!  Man, I've been chewed up one side and down the other by it!!
