Smith-Corona Clipper Extra Space

I have a Smith-Corona Clipper ca. 1949. On occasion while I am typing it will advance a space even though I have not hit the space bar. It happens more often if I have shift lock engaged. It is very random when it happens. Seeing as I am new to collecting I was hoping somebody could give me a nudge in the right direction on the best way to troubleshoot this problem.

Re: Smith-Corona Clipper Extra Space

Hi Kevin. Your first step should be to give the escapement a good cleaning (plenty of posts in the here on what an escapement is and how best to clean it). Does the skipping increase with typing speed?

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Re: Smith-Corona Clipper Extra Space

Hi Uwe,
Yes it does seem to skip more when I increase my typing speed. I will search the forum for escapement and see what I come up with. Thank you for the nudge. I'm still learning the terminology, but I do find these mechanical wonders fascinating.
