Underwood SX-150 help

I'm really new to typewriters. But when I saw this one for sale I had to have it.

It works pretty well but it has an alignment issue. After you shift the type doesn't line up. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Like I said I'm pretty new to this so I don't know how to change the ribbon or even clean and maintain it. Any help with these things would also be appreciated.

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

Hey! I just happened to have the same problem with the same typewriter.  My thread is here http://typewriter.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=978.

See if you can pop the side panels off and look for those nuts that I adjusted on mine.  Maybe that will fix the alignment. I believe that a 10mm wrench is what fit on mine.  I had to adjust them on both sides, and then I had another issue with the shift lock, but that is because my shift mechanism was being held together with a bobby pin and that was allowing it to slide in shift lock.  Hopefully yours doesn't have that issue. If you have questions ask, and I'll do my best to try to help.

For a new ribbon, your best bet is to just order any old 1/2" ribbon and rewind it onto your current spools.  The spools for theses guys are special and hard to find.

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

How did you manage to remove the side plates?

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

I don't know if it is the correct way, but first I reached in the front and popped off the front cover.  Then I reached into the sides from the front, and popped out the side covers.  If I remember correctly, I did have to help them off with a long screwdriver used to sort of push them out. Once out, they went back in easily with some metal clips that hold them in place.

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

I'll try to explain what I have found out but I'm not very good with the terms. When I shift the segment moves down to type capital letters. When I disengage shift the segment moves up to type lower case again but it doesn't go all the way back up. If I press on the bottem of the shift key the segment goes up the rest of the way and everything lines up. I'm thinking oil in the right place will fix this problem.

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

Ah, I see.  Yes, I think you are right.  I misunderstood the problem, sorry.  Clean all those shift linkages on the bottom and then just a bit of oil.  Sounds like it's just getting stuck. Then, if that doesn't get it, poke around on the inside, watching while you operate the shift. I don't know all the terms either, but you should be able to see the mechanism where the Segment slides up and down.  Clean that really well.

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

I don't think you should adjust any screws yet - I think it's a cleaning problem only!
Inspect and clean (meths or de-greaser) the bearings and pivots upon which the segment rides up and down.  You could lightly oil these as well if it seems necessary afterwards, but cleaning the old oil and general gunk away should have the section moving freely again, and then the problem will be cured.  Good luck.

Sincerely,
beak.

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

It probably doesn't matter but what de-greaser should I get?

Re: Underwood SX-150 help

I use naptha on mine.  You could also use mineral spirits or denatured alcohol.
