Hello everyone,
When I was growing up my mum had a Hermes Ambassador with a carbon ribbon. We children were not allowed to touch it. I can remember being fascinated watching the type slugs hit the platen and the words appearing on the paper.
Fast forward to middle age! My first typewriter was a Hermes Ambassador which I retrieved from a garden shed. I enjoy using old things that still work as they are supposed to. I prefer using office machines to portables and have a small number of each.

Hi Steve. Full size machines sure do work nicely. I'll agree with that!

After seing some of the great uses for a typewriter for journaling and memory keeping, I've been on the lookout for a cursive machine.
Thanks for all the contributions of everyone so far, this is such a great and informative resource!

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum. Been a lurker for a while. I just got my first typewriter, an Underwood Champion Portable. I have an issue with it, which I will be posting in the repairs section.

Hello Everyone
I am new to the world of typewriters.
My first typewriter is an Underwood Elliott Fisher Champion typewriter SN: 1436449. I picked it up in Northern Ontario for $40. No case but a cover.
I discovered that I could do a pretty good job of cleaning up a typewriter. It now looks excellent and is in 100% working order. Admittedly the one newb mistake I did do with my first machine is over oiling. I now know a little better realizing that these machines are made to run mostly dry.
But I am now hooked on typewriters and the Underwood is beautiful. And I have much to learn.
When I was in high school (early seventies) I had a beautiful portable typewriter that I loved. I babied it but after high school I made the huge mistake of selling it. (Small, blue with a blue zippered case. I believe that it might have been an Brother) My goal is to someday find the exact machine.
Thanks for following. I'm sure that I'll have many questions.
Wayne

@Theoldman That sounds like a Olvetti Lettera 32.
