Re: Part needed for Olivetti Lettera 32

Thanks everyone for your support. I have had the machine packed up and ready to ship to a typewriter repair shop in Toronto, Ontario. They say that they repair typewriters and to ship it to them. I have emailed them many times in the last three weeks requesting a shipping address. They have not replied.
Tomorrow I will unpack it and give it another try.
I'm sure once I look at it with new eyes that I will have some questions.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Where are you located? I'm in Toronto and have a fair idea of who is doing what in terms of repairs - and not all of them should be trusted. Can I ask who you were in contact with?

Re: Part needed for Olivetti Lettera 32

I am in Windsor.

The people that I was in contact with are "Toronto Typewriters".

I would love if you could recommend a reputable repair shop that I would feel confident dealing with and a shop that would allow shipping to and from the shop.
If you know of a business even closer to Windsor than that would be even better due to the cost of shipping.

It's just as well that you aren't getting a reply to your emails... I would definitely not send a typewriter to that "website" for repair.

I don't think the cost of shipping would change much, if at all, even if you found somewhere closer. There are a few known repairmen in the GTA, one in Hamilton, and another in Kitchener. However, my recommendation would be to not ship it anywhere. The SM9 is a fairly common model, and you could certainly buy another locally in equally good cosmetic condition just for the cost of shipping your SM9 to Toronto and back. Keep an eye on local ads and in the interim you could always try repairing it yourself. Conversely, if you (or a friend) ever travels to the GTA I could take a look at it myself.

Re: Part needed for Olivetti Lettera 32

Thanks so much Uwe.

I am so glad to get your reply. They did just answer my email but thier reply basically said that they were too busy and a repair would cost too much. Not the best way to conduct a business but given that it really doesn't matter. I'm not doing business with them. Thanks for your input.
I gave the machine another look at today but with no luck. The carriage is stuck to the left. The right margin stop only travels about 12 points than it will not move. I believe that this is the heart of the problem.
I have tried and I need help with this.
There is a shop in London, On. About half the drive. I believe that I will make the drive and get an appraisal from them. I have nothing to lose.

Forest City Business Equipment is the name of the business.

BTW Uwe. Extremely generous offer to take a look at it yourself. I do appreciate this and wish that I could take you up on your offer.

Re: Part needed for Olivetti Lettera 32

Thanks Valiant

Today I took a closer look at my 1974 SM9.
The bushings seen to be very thick at the locations mentioned in your write up so I think that in this particular newer model SM this is a non issue.
But I will inspect other SMs for this issue if I ever get another model.
Thanks for your input.
