What do you use your typewriter for?

Sorry if this has already been asked recently.

This is just for general conversation. I understand some of you may simply collect typewriters. However, for those of you who love to use typewriters on a regular basis, what do you use them for? I am curious. I want as many excuses as possible to use my typewriter! I love typewriters enough to make them practical for everyday use.

A hobby of mine that I have been trying to make into a habit has been journaling a little every day in a moleskine type book with a fountain pen. I have considered using my typewriter for some journaling as well.

I have typed a snail mail letter before for the purpose of describing one of my typewriters to a relative and I plan on writing many more letters, thank you notes, and holiday cards/notes in the future. (Thanksgiving and Christmas, anyone?)

I have typed up to-do lists and grocery lists.

I also noticed it's really easy to fill out forms with a typewriter and I plan on doing that just for fun if nothing else.

I read they're useful for typing up labels and envelopes. I like to send snail mail as well as label things for organization so I will definitely be doing that.

I hope to do a lot more as my most recent acquisition is a 1948 Royal Quiet De Luxe and I feel it is modern enough to use for every day tasks. Much easier to use extensively than my 1932 Imperial Good Companion.

So, what do you do with your typewriter?

Re: What do you use your typewriter for?

I've started corresponding with several people here via typewriter.  I am also going to do the NaNoWriMo thing in November.  There is a thread about that in the World of Typewriters part of the forum.

Smith Premier typewriters are cool!

Re: What do you use your typewriter for?

You can also type your name into books, sideways on of course, but it looks nice. I recently typed the return date into some self checked-out library books too. This evening I used one of my machines for a paper sewing pattern. I have stopped using my computer for first drafts of whatever project I am working on, and if it is something short, I'll bypass the computer completely until it's time to make a digital back-up.
I've made typed labels for my kids' school stuff, type letters, shopping lists, to do lists, jam labels, storage labels, anything else labels. Forms. Sticky notes. A "No Junk Mail" sign for the letterbox with my 6cpi machine.(The postie half-ignores it.) Journal. I try to use a typewriter for anything that I can.

That's great, Malole.

I just thought of another one: it's really useful to type cooking recipes onto index cards. Very nicely formatted and legible!

Re: What do you use your typewriter for?

i make a lot of scrapbooks and i like to type out quote cards to insert here and there.  i am very partial to cursive typewriters for that handwritten look.

I normally use mine to do some journalling. Although I haven't figure out to use the card holder function yet.

And you can make your own business/calling cards too. I made a few recently and a small leather case to keep them in.

Touch Typing Therapy

If you think about it, workplace violence was never a serious problem until they took typerwriters out of the workplace!

After I reluctantly cancelled my land line service, I typed a label for my dear old rotary phone: OUT OF ORDER.
