For what it is worth, my advice is - DON'T !  I've been in the typewriter trade for 38 years, and at one time worked in a small business that sold commercial stationery too.  Some of our customers had metal date or numbering stamps - the sort with rotating metal wheels.  For these, we used to recommend METAL STAMP INK, because standard rubber stamp ink (also called endorsing ink) would corrode the metal wheels when left in contact with the felt pad carrying the ink.  So using ink for rubber stamp pads may well damage your typewriter beyond use - perhaps a beloved machine that has survived for sixty years until dosed up with corroding ink by a well-meaning owner !  If you must re-ink ribbons, perhaps to obtain a colour that is not commercially available, try to obtain metal stamp ink.  It is far less likely to damage your machine !  Lecture over !

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is it right if I say that any sort of ink pad that you can purchase at a craft store is designed for rubber stamps only, and thus should be the kind we should avoid?

If I recall correctly, metal stamp ink is something that's pretty hard to find in retail stores and is usually has to be specially ordered, since most metal stamps are used in an industrial setting (for numbering machines and such).

I'm trying to get a reproduction decal made for my Hermes Rocket, but my decal is so faded that I can't get a suitable reference picture for the decal maker. I'm looking to see if anyone has one of these machines and could take a clear photo of their decal for me?

I'm looking for the logo that has "Hermes" in white and "Rocket" in red. The decal guy is looking for a picture from straight above the machine with a ruler next to the logo for reference. He says that the logo doesn't have to be perfect, just needs to have the outlines and stuff.

Anyone out there have this machine?

I'm kind of looking for a "dry" option, easy and quick, just to tidy up after writing something.

Has anyone come up with a good replacement product for those old gummy typebar cleaner wads? I've heard that some people use those kneaded art erasers, but I'm curious if anyone's actually tried it out. I'd like to have something easy on hand for a quick cleaning touchup without having to bust out the alcohol and Q-tips.

I've also been trying to figure out how to do this on the cheap.

I think I had a last-resort epiphany last night, if I can't figure out how to use acrylic and need to end up using glass.

Thrift stores always have huge ugly framed pictures for pretty cheap (less than $1 if you go on sale days). I figure that I can just buy five huge super ugly picture frames and then take out the glass fronts in the frames and use them to make a display case.

I think this would work better for someone who isn't planning on taking off the cover very often, since the glass will probably be heavy and more prone to accidents? I'm still on the hunt for a cheap acrylic supply, since I'll probably want to be taking off the cover every other day or so...

I'm not sure what's really different about it. I've been peering over it and it looks basically the same, but I can't seem to get past the part where the rod pulls out. Maybe it's just stuck in there?

This is the same way I remove the platen from my Model 1, but it doesn't seem to work for the #3.

I can't seem to figure out how to remove the platen on my Remington Portable #3. I have a Remington Model 1 that I know how to take the platen off, but following the same protocol, I can't get it off of the #3.

I'm stumped!

Hello everyone!

I just purchased a Remington Noiseless Portable typewriter off of eBay and I just noticed that the pictures of the keyboard show that there are calculus-type math symbols - sigma, alpha, beta, etc. I didn't know that these keyboards existed and my Google-fu seems to be poor tonight, as I can't seem to find any information regarding this type of keyboard.

Does anyone have any information about this typewriter? I don't have pictures yet, but I will post some as soon as I get this thing in the mail.

Thanks!
