Thanks for the replies. It’s a Torpedo escapement put in a SeniorRiter unit. Same machines really. Interesting that the star wheels might be the same. I’ll do a couple of type samples and post them. I have a Bluebird that I think is pica, so could show if there’s a difference. I wish I was a more talented/experienced technician. I enjoy working on typewriters but have my limits. Need an apprentice position somewhere. I’ll post the pictures soon.

I think my repair person swapped a pica machine escapement out and put an elite typewriter escapement in. Seems to type a bit funny and the letters seem rather condensed. Is it my imagination? Is the spacing controlled by the type rack or does the gear on the escapement affect spacing?

the parts machine was otherwise identical.

Looking into this as possible, but it looks clean enough. Might be some grease might help and I’ll keep trying different stuff. So far nothing seems to make the basket snap into the appropriate place. Frustrating since I replaced springs to no good effect. Thinking it’ll be my ee cummings machine.

I just got an Underwood 319 and noticed the capital lock was engaged. I suspect now it was stored for decades with the basket in the capital position. As a result the basket will engage in the capital position but won’t return to the lowercase position. I tried tightening up the two springs, oiling the pivot points, but it still isn’t working right. Is there something I’m missing that someone here can think of as a solution? I’ve never encountered a basket that won’t return to the lower position.

I’d have a look at the pictures of similar vintage Erikas on the database. I have a 1943, but by then it’s a totally different mechanism.
