For an Underwood No.3, I need the screw that holds the Line Space Lever in it's hole from underneath. No luck at the hardware store and I tried every screw they have. A fleeting moment of optimism!

Did you try right click and choose "open image in new tab?" If that doesn't work I don't know how else to post an image. Any help would be appreciated!

Here is a picture of our No.3 with the different front panel, I hope I attached it correctly! I used the flash so the textured finish shows better. Thanks for all you're information.

Yes SoucekFan I agree. It is part of it's history and we will leave it that way. Although I do wish it was all original! I was just wondering if Underwood made some changes for the No.3 at some point to upgrade it's look. Makes sense it was a later change by an owner, maybe the original got messed up somehow. Thanks for your input.

Thank you SoucekFan,
So the No.3's I'm seeing online with gold pin striping etc, and the Underwood name are more than likely original? I wonder how hard it is to find an original to replace this one?

Hello, It's been 9yrs. since I was on this sight! Time flies. About 10 yrs. ago I restored quite a few manual typewriters, mostly portables that we then sold. I don't do it anymore but when we found an old Underwood in really decent condition and only owning a 1954 Hermes 2000, we decided we needed this one. It's a No. 3, 11" Serial number is 3742229-11. It's in really nice condition and really only needed to be cleaned and some minor adjustments and it needs the screw that holds the carriage return arm in it's hole, it works but is a bit sloppy. From the serial no. I believe it's from 1930-1. My question for anyone here is about the front panel. I've been searching images online and have not found one with the panel like ours. It has no name on it and the center part is that rough, textured finish, don't remember what it's called. I've seen others similar but the textured part is recessed, like a panel, ours is all flat. The color choice lever is not see-saw and it's up on the top. Just wondering if anyone has knowledge of this feature. Most I've seen have some type of gold pinstripe and the Underwood name on them. Thanks for the help

Hello all. I have been doing typewriter repair, cleaning adjusting lubricating and minor repairs for almost a year. Mostly older machines all manual. Have had a few almost stump me but I managed to figure them out and get them working well. I just had someone bring me a Hermes 3000, and I hope it's not too much for my experience! Better to tell them I can't work on it than mess it up!!!! To start could someone tell me what the red ribbon pully system is that connects to the paper bale? The left side is disconnected and hanging loose and there is a very small spring still attached to the ribbons end. That and the fact that the ribbon won't lift when the keys are depressed are the only things I think that are wrong with it. I read on line that to take the body off you remove the feet and I think the carriage? In the back, one on each side is a screw and small plate with a plus and minus symbol on it, does this remove carriage IN ONE PIECE ? Hoping for some advise. Thanks Tom

Uwe, I used sewing machine oil sparingly, and really only on the bearings that the carriage runs on. I am relatively new to typewriter repair and I know I have a lot to learn but have a pretty good understanding of them. The escape wheel seems to do it's job with the space bar but when you strike a key it doesn't finish what it's suppose to.It won't release completely, you have to give the carriage a little pressure and it will advance. I just keep watching the escape wheel and all the linkage over and over to see if I can figure out why it won't work. Could I have done something while cleaning it, I don't see anything that is disconnected say by blowing it out with the compressor, and I'm pretty sure I didn't bend anything, didn't really poke around in there too much, the machine was fairly clean to start with. I guess I'm just missing something that I'm not familiar with. This is driving me nuts!

Everything within the linkage to the typebars seems to be working fine. The only thing I have noticed that might keep carriage from advancing is this. If you hold the carriage release and move the carriage back and forth slowly you can feel that it doesn't move real smoothly, it slows down. If the carriage is all the way to the right as far as it will go, no tabs set, and you hold carriage release lever and push slowly to the left when the carriage is about centered it will stop if you don't push harder. I'm pretty sure there is no dirt in there. It worked fine before I cleaned it!! And I kind of over oiled it just now to see if more lubrication would make a difference but it didn't. If you look in the carriage at the bearings while it's moving I can see nothing rubbing.Going to clean again and blow it out, maybe something microscopic!!??
