Very cool! You found a lot of toabacco inside the machine? I gues your grandfather rolled his own. They're brilliant typewriters, so I'm sure you're going to really enjoy it.
Yeah. It's very very close to my De Luxe.

I just got a new addition to my typewriter collection from my great grandparents. They bought it in 1947 most likely. They used it for gerneral things back then when they got it. Funny thing is I found a lot of tobacco in it when i was cleaning it today lol. I have a 1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe. They are very very simular.

That counter in front of the serial number: what is it geared to; what action causes it to advance?
It's geared to every time you return the carriage back to the side to type again.

I have a '36 KHM; the KH was only around for a year or two I think. You would need to check the serial number to verify if that's what you have. Regardless, it's a great machine and a good deal at $25 (providing of course it's complete and working reasonably well). Enjoy!
Oh yes she works 100%. Just needs a good cleaning. I looked at everything before I bought it. It's Definetly a KH. Serial is KH-1780328. Typewriter database says it's a 35'.

She needs some derusting and cleaning and oiling. I have some before photos. Then when I'm done with cleaning and restoring the paint, I will post after photos.

Wow great find! I think you are right with the 40s. As for the paper, I use normal computer paper on mine. Also, find the serial number. Move the carrage around to see it. There's a website called www.typewriterdatabase.com . That should help you date it.
