Re: Ugliest typewriter

I agree with Amelia. The typewriters after the 60s really don't do anything for me. They all look like cheap, plastic electromechanical/electronic monsters. Give me a mechanical machine any day.

Re: Ugliest typewriter

Yes I didn't understand that either. In Australia, I think they're called "prisoners".

It's quite possible she literally meant inmates, as in prison inmates. After all, it would be difficult to hide/conceal contraband or weapons within a clear typewriter case...

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.

Re: Ugliest typewriter

Sorry guys, here in the U.S. they are referred to as inmates or prisoners. Our prisons are sometimes referred to as "correctional facilities."

Amelia: Okay, right. I thought it might have been a typo, or some reference that had gone over my head.

I had no idea that these see-through models existed. That has got to be the most interesting thing I've heard this year.

Re: Ugliest typewriter

Don't know what happened, I'm sure I posted this yesterday but something must have gone wrong... anyway, here's the charmingly ugly Olivetti Dora designed by legend Ettore Sottsass, who also designed the Valentine.  This is just a picture pulled from the internet but I managed to get one of these on Deptford Market for about £5...

Re: Ugliest typewriter

Hi, I just posted this in the Flickr images discussion as well but I love this picture.  Typewriter found at the bottom of Deptford Creek.  I love how the keys haven't corroded and look like teeth.  Good luck identifying the model...
