Speaking of smelly, I picked up my 3rd Royal QDL today because its my favorite typewriter and it was only 10 bucks and I keep hoping to find one that works perfectly. It was at a garage sale advertised online and I had the owner hold it for me until I could get off work. She held it all day for me otherwise I probably wouldn't have taken it. It smells like at least one of my other typewriters smelled when I picked it up, but its not musty or moldy, not formaldehyde-e, it smells like poop. And the type bars don't look great but who knows it may clean up and work. I will have to air it out for a week before I do anything with it. I wanted to leave it outside but its too humid.

My third machine of this year is this workhorse, a Silver-Reed 500. Works pretty well though i need to get a new ribbon for it.

One more, another Silver-Reed machine, this time an SR12.

1948 Royal KMM with 14" carriage, found at a pawn shop. They were asking $60 but took $40, which was the maximum I would have paid. Fair amount of dust in the nooks and crannies, and plenty of paint wear (like on the escapement housing on the back), but overall decent user. Well aligned and the mechanism works fine. Even a decent ribbon, once I respooled it properly.
Must have been owned by a business since there's a brass inventory tag screwed onto the left side (as you type). No identifying marks though -- it would be fun to find out which business (could be long gone). Dates are scribed into the underside of the paper rest indicating when the machine was serviced -- no dates after the mid-50s though (which makes me think the machine was deaccessioned not too long after).

Picked up a Royal KH (1935 vintage) with numerical tabulator along with a decent typing table with two folding side wings. Typebars need to be loosened up and the slugs cleaned, but generally very decent shape.
Also, an Oliver #9 from 1919 -- first one of these beasts I have ever played with. Very dirty and in need of cleaning and de-gunking. Also, the drawband and hook need to be replaced. I think I'll give a try making a homemade replacement for the latter: Making a Carriage Draw Cord Hook & Reattaching the Cord to the Mainspring of an Oliver – myoldtypewriter
It has original ribbon and the proper ribbon spool cores, but I'd like to see if universal spools will work -- I don't think so, at least not without some careful reaming of the holes. But I need to get everything working first.
