I'm having a similar problem with my Underwood 5, though I think it has something to do with the carriage frame alignment. (The frame was fractured and I had to JB Weld it back together, suggesting that something else may be misaligned as well.) One side has more play than the other, though I haven't figured out which side is "correct." In any case, you might find pages 40-43 of the Underwood Typewriter Maintenance & Repair manual at to be helpful.

First typewriter I've taken completely apart. Note the graceful design of the typebars.
And reassembled:

Answer supplied by a typewriter revolutionary. The piece attaches to the roller at the front of the carriage frame. It triggers the bell.

You can't add enough padding, even if it's just a lot crumpled newspaper. Just received a 1938 Mercedes Selekta that the seller left completely unpadded in its original case. I heard the jangle of metal as the USPS carrier dropped it on my porch. Sure enough, it's a mess. The seller probably thought that the case was enough to protect it, but the case itself fell apart when I lifted it out. The machine had way too much room to rattle around in.

Though I always try to be careful to label parts when I take a typewriter apart to clean/repair, I messed up this time.
Can anyone tell me where in my '26 Underwood Model 5 the part in these photos should go?
I think it's from the carriage assembly (maybe right side?) but can't seem to find a matching spot. Many thanks!
