Parts » WTB: Royal portable platen knob » 04-6-2020 15:09:06

Looking for the right hand (if you’re looking at the machine) platen knob for a Royal Model P. I think other Royals use similar knobs as the P, so if you have one I will buy it. Thank you.

Wow, looks really great. Seems a hell of a job to me, how much time did you spend?

Thanks. Not sure how many hours, probably around 25 total. I did the restoration over several months so it was an hour here or an hour there.

Below is a link to some before and after pictures of my Oliver No. 5. Mechanically, it was in good shape but it had some cosmetic issues. Mainly, the paint was completely oxidized which I correct with Meguairs 7 Glaze followed by Meguiars Ultimate Compound. Some of the paint was like alligator skin under the keys which didn't entirely go away but it is much less noticeably now. I used Mother's Mag Aluminum polish for the chrome parts. Some of the chrome plating was completely gone, but not too bad. Platen is hard and the rollers have a flat spot, but it still feeds paper just fine.

In terms of my process, I do the following: use an air compressor and paint brush to remove all dust, disassemble and clean parts with lacquer thinner, use Evaporust on any heavy rusted parts, rejuvenate paint with Meguiars 7 Glaze, polish with Meguiars Ultimate Compound, polish chrome with Mother Mag Aluminum polish, reassemble, lube with Hoppes gun oil in a syringe, and test to make sure everything works.

The 'C' typeslug was broken off and missing, but luckily I found one online from a No. 3.... so I was able to cut it off with a Dremel and attach with JB Weld. Can't even tell it isn't original.

Also the serial number is #1828. According to TypewriterDatabase, that mean it is from 1894 (the first year of production). Pretty neat if I am reading the chart correctly. https://typewriterdatabase.com/remington.42.typewriter-serial-number-database#bw_06

Hello, I recently picked up this Remington Standard No. 5. Mechanically everything works, but has some cosmetic work to be done. I've been googling similar machines but noticed a few odd things I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction on. 1) The ribbon spool has two wood dowels on either side which appear to convert it from a 1.5" ribbon to a standard 0.5" ribbon. Any ideas? Never seen this before. And 2) the front where it says "Remington Standard No. 6".... it appears that the "No. 6" was re-lettered as I can see the white outline of what appears to be an older letter. Was this common? Or is this not actually a '6'. Thank you. Jim.

I should also add, if you have any good information on this machine, please share.

Maintenance & Repairs » Ultrasonic cleaner for typewriter » 18-11-2019 23:18:42

Anyone ever tried using an ultrasonic cleaner on a typewriter? I have a pretty large one at work I can use. I would think for some small/ medium size portables you could put them right in (obviously taking care of any decals and delegate areas). Thank you.

Check out Meguiars No. 7 Glaze. Old single stage paint dries out which causes chipping, dullness, and brittleness. The Meguairs product adds the enriching oils back to the paint. It’s easily the best product for single stage paint on typewriters. You can do more if you want like use Meguairs Ultimate Polish which will remove scratches but it will cut through the paint if you aren’t careful. No. 7 Glaze has no abrasives so it’ll just rejuvenate the paint without otherwise changing it. Most auto parts stores sell it.

Have you tried gun cleaner? It is usually kerosene based and a good product. It does smell but not as bad as other solvents I’ve used. Or I find that lacquer thinner in a small squeeze bottle doesn’t get smelly.

Maintenance & Repairs » Oliver No. 5 only printing tops of letters » 22-9-2019 15:13:39

My Oliver No. 5 is only printing the tops of letters (both upper and lower case). How do I adjust the alignment? If I very slightly move the carriage forward about 1/16th of an inch by pressing the FIG key, it types perfect. Thanks.
