I bought Richard Polt’s The Jackalope typewriter pad, and I can’t recommend it highly enough! Very affordable, and very perfect for the job. I bought it quite a few years back now, but it looks like he still makes them....http://writingball.blogspot.com/p/typewriter-pads-for-sale.html?m=1

Hi Guys-

I was wondering if anyone has experience with Swintec/Nakajima typewriters and would be up to offering any thoughts on them. How to you like the key feel/actual typing experience? It is so ridiculously tempting to want to order a brand new typewriter for which factory after market service is still available.I do prefer the complete experience of manual typewriting, but there is something about the idea of a brand new typewriter with factory support that I just can't get past. I wonder a lot what their key feel typing experience it actually like. There seems to be a distinct difference between lower and upper models in the catalogs, but it is not clear to me if the feel of typing on each keyboard is different. The Swintec 7000, though very expensive at around $700 seems to be calling my name much more than I would like it it to...talk me out of it!

I bought it. I watched it. I don't know. I almost find the documentary "The Typewriter (In the 21st Century)", (which is currently totally available on Youtube), a better film. California Typewriter is a bit over the top in my opinion. As someone who believes that the Typewriter is the ONLY way, it is disappointing how much of a BIG DEAL they seem to make it feel that the typewriter is. I can't imagine anything but the typewriter period. I don't need to be told it's SO special. It's a typewriter. It's different than ANYTHING else, and you can't beat it. PERIOD.

Haven't tried it, but I would be very interested in it. Looks like it could potentially be a very classic typewriting paper. I have  really been enjoying typing on Permalife 25% cotton paper lately.

And the machine costing several thousand Dollars is what would put everyone off from actually buying.  A lot of people say that they would like a new, quality, typewriter but when faced with the reality of the price they would suddenly go cold.  I sometimes get e-mails asking me if I have any cheap refurbished typewriters.  When I enquire what they are expecting to pay, I get replies ranging from £20 to £40 (about $25 to $47).  Naturally when I give then a real-world price, they do not want to know any more.

I have a mixed response to this. When you consider that classic German camera manufacturer Leica still offers new film BODIES (NO lens included) for $4.6k USD, I would think that there must be a market out there. It almost seems like it is just whether or not someone is willing to make it. The tooling and machinery to cast all of the parts for any given machine must be long scrapped by now

Thanks for posting the question, and for the responses. I am interested in the same- and very happy to hear that people have been pleased with JJ Short. Are their prices reasonable?

It seems in that with a few of the people that I have typewritten back and forth with on here, and I what I probably would have expected, the use of typewriters and fountain pens goes hand in hand. I just wanted to check in and say hello to any of the other fountain pen users out there! I am a big fan of the fountain pen, which I started writing with back in the 3rd grade when my mother's boss gave me one of his as a gift after I could not hold back my curiosity and admiration of his. From then on, I've certainly had my periods of surrendering to the ballpoint- but more or less, the fountain pen has remained, and as I've gotten older, my love for them has been quite strong. For me, there is nothing like a pen that has a design of yesteryear and a nib that writes a nice wet line, not too thick, not too thin. I am a big fan of Bexley pens for their great American manufacturing, and their designs that nod at pens from the golden era. Most recently I've become a fan of ebonite pens, finally splurging after admiring for a long time. JUST like typewriters, they seem to be DANGEROUSLY addictive!! My current favorite ink is Montblanc Permanent Blue. I often write with Diamine Registrar's Iron Gall ink, which is truly my favorite, but I go through periods of time of thinking that ink might be too acidic for my steel pen nibs. It is the permanence of both of these inks that interest me greatly. Just some thoughts! Looking forward to hearing any of your fountain pen stories. I've thrown this rather awful photo in just to share my current two favorite pens.

Hi There- I have had really good luck with Southworth 100% cotton, 20lb. paper. The paper can be obtained at excellent prices - I think I pay around $15/ream which is excellent for a cotton paper. Cotton paper is sort of considered to be the traditional gold standard for important documents that are intended to be kept for a long time. You probably want to be sure that whatever paper you end up using is acid free.

I'll keep an eye out. I'd like to have at least one more SG1 if I can find one I can afford. No, mine didn't come with a plastic paper support. In fact, I didn't even know such a thing existed until I saw the parts diagrams in the repair manual. It looks like that paper guide might have been the only easily-breakable part on the whole machine, so it's not surprising not many survived. Have any of the SG1 club members who has a surviving sample checked online into having some replicas made by a 3-D printing outfit? Cost is coming down dramatically for work like that, and it seems like that would be something club folks would jump on. I know I'd be happy to buy a replica for my SG1. Technology marches on!

I have often thought the same thing! If I had any experience with 3D printing I would give it a whirl, but unfortunately I do not
