Smith Corona Super Silent - Sound Material Stinks! - Options?

I have all of the panels off of a 1954 Smith Corona Super Silent and it is obvious that the sound deadening material smells like it was in someones damp basement for the last decade or so. Once put back together, the typewriter will live in our living room so I need to rid this smell for good.

In order of preference:
1.) Is there any way to effectively rid the material of this smell? If so what products can I use? I am in the U.S.
2.) Can the material be replaced? If so, what material can I use?
3.) If I remove and do not replace the material, how much louder do you think it would be?

Thank you!

Hi Again Mango

For this job, I'd be inclined to start simple by trying a product like Lysol's Fabric Mist or Fabreze Fabric Refresher Extra Strength. If this isn't adequate, contact your nearest industrial supply house and see what they suggest. These places supply chemicals to flood clean-up and remediation companies and the like who deal with the real messes and bad smells. Hope this helps and happy new year,

We humans go through many computers in our lives, but in their lives, typewriters go through many of us.
In that way, they’re like violins, like ancestral swords. So I use mine with honor and treat them with respect.
I try to leave them in better condition than I met them. I am not their first user, nor will I be their last.

The pronoun has always been capitalized in the English language for more than 700 years.
