Impressive finds and some gorgeous machines! I have yet to go to a typewriter rally so to speak, aside from one in Evergreen Park Illinois a year ago, but I didn't get to see many machines there. Once in a while I'll find a good deal in conversation with another tech or collector, but I'm beginning to worry that there are no more cheap machines in the wild in my area. Then again, I scored two dead Praxis' for 20$ a couple weeks ago.

Maintenance & Repairs » Underwood Standard #3 14 in. carriage return band or strap » 20-11-2022 01:53:18 |
It is generally called the drawstrap or drawband. Super easy to repair, just make sure that yours is intact, unrepaired, and retains the mounting hardware on either end. Sometimes I see drawbands that have been stitched in the middle which can make them a bit too short to function properly. I assume you are reusing the original? When rewinding the mainspring on a standard desktop, usually the carriage is pulled with about 2 pounds of force.

For plastic, dawn dish soap and some scrubbing. For glass, steel wool on the rings, and a super gentle polishing compound on the glass.

A lot of newer or euro machines have small hair torsion springs that hold the ribbon advance pawls to the gearing. Those springs can come undone, common on machines like the Hermes Baby. Double check that all the pawls are indeed springy.
