Maintenance & Repairs » Smith Corona Folding - Type legends needed » 11-2-2024 12:28:13

Hi,
I recently bought one with english keyboard layout. Unfortunately some of the keys are so much used that the legends are missing. I already was searching online for adequate pictures.
Is anyone here willing to help me and provide a set of pictures so I can recreate the key legends myself?

Chrs

I also ask type examples - even with specific ones "to check alignment issues" :D
Also unusual perspectives like from underneath or the gears of the spool assembly help to see if someone likes to scam you.

Portable Typewriters » LC Smith (Corona) 4X » 05-2-2024 02:39:41

Hi,
I hope you can help me out. I saw in the Typewriter Database, that there was a Version (4X serials) produced. The number was fairly low with less than 3000 items.

There is no informations on this typewriter. As I see it lacks some of the features like a bell, a left platen knob and seems like a low cost variant of the version 4.

Good point, my mom always said, take good advices but don't forget to think - So I checked the ingredients or in this case use one where I know whats inside. Also a lot of detergents have high amounts of oxidizers so sometimes an old fashioned "full" (German term) detergent is better. That's what I used here. Warm water often helps a lot so yesterday just brushing parts with foam instantly turned the foam deep brown. Now all is shiny like a piano

Hi,
I am trying to clean the surfaces of an Olympia Mod 8. The typewriter is completly corvered with a light layer which makes the black parts dull and the metal parts also a bit brownish. Like a thin layer was evaporated onto everything. According to my tests at a hidden part of the typewriter, its quite responsive to acetone but also cleans well with cotton especially if there is mild warmth applied. Rubbing alcohol doesnt work. As the machine consists of too many parts to clean them individually I seek for a better solution.
Is there an expert advice how to clean. Even letting it stay for a longer poeriod in a cleaning bath would be ok, but I dont want to do this before I have some better ideas than my guesswork now.

It seems there is no source to get this. So I now rely on good old reverse engineering and lots of pictures to get everything done and assembled again.

Maybe I will digest everything into a repair manual myself after finishing.

Maintenance & Repairs » Hermes 3000 platen release knob » 12-9-2023 01:45:56

It worked. Thank you a lot It seemed that the previous owner (btw. he sold it on ebay as Hermes Media :D for super cheap price) had used one of this special screws for the chassis and so used the wrong screw there. I corrected this.

The flat springs are now also correct. I noticed that on half of the platen turn the ratched sounded different like its not fully working. In This case swapping the springs helps. Or at best use tape to secure them at their respective spots when disassembling.
