I think the main spring on the Royal 10 and the KMM are the same. The 10 does have a screw and a worm gear to tighten the main spring.  It's just hard to see in this picture.

Now that I have a little time off work I decided to get to this Royal 10 with a wide carriage. The problem is that it binds at the far left hand side of the page. It has been thoroughly cleaned so I'm sure the problem is not a dirty rail.

I have tried adjusting these clamps that hold the carriage to the rail and this helped a little.

With the draw string detached it feels like the carriage moves freely with just slightly resistance at both ends of carriage travel.

Is there anything else I could try adjusting? Is it possible that the rail could be imperceptibly bent? And if the solution is to just put more tension on the main spring is it possible to over tension the spring and do some damage?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been working on a Royal KMM on and off for a while. Got it cleaned up and working well, or well enough. But one thing I wasn't able to do was remove the platen and give it a good cleaning.

One of the grub screws that hold the shafts in place inside the platen was stuck fast. It was going no where. So stuck was it in fact that too much torque had broken off one side of the slot. The machine still worked, so I was resigned to leaving it as it was.

But I have a long holiday coming up and so I decided that some of my machines purchased in the last twelve months should have a bath. I set upon a plan to remove this grub screw.

Every day, once in the morning and once in the evening,  I gave it some penetrating oil. After a week I tried again, to no avail.

Frustrated and seeing no other way I got out the dremel. Using a die grinder bit I ground it flush with the shafts it was screwed into. Then with another, pointed die grinder I machined a new slot.

After some tapping, one way then another, forcing it to start turning, it came out. But not until it had bent the screwdriver.

Now the grub screw is back in place, but not as tight as before. It's just a little shorter and can still be used. Now I'm just waiting for my holiday to start so that typewriter bath time can begin.

We have a one month old baby at home, so routine is very important, especially around bed time. So this is our bed time routine. My daughter, Bonnie, plays with her mum's phone while her mum is in the shower and my son, Odin, is in his cot sleeping; after his bed time feed. During this time I finish up any work I have left to do.
​Next comes the fun part. Her mum tells Bonnie that it is time to go to bed. She comes into my office announcing that she has come to type.
​She usually chooses the Royal 10 because she likes to use the big A3 sheets. At first she just played with the keys, but then started asking how to spell words.
​Now she thinks of three random words and I tell her how to spell them as she types them. After that I put them into a sentence. Usually something silly like "The cow rode the pony around in a circle." She thinks this is hilarious.
​This whole routine takes up a bit of time, but while she is thinking that learning is fun I want to keep it going.

I'm looking for replacement feet for my Royal 10 typewriter. Does anyone here sell them?
