Haha! Good idea... that's a crucial bit of info, isn't it? In my defense, it was almost midnight when I posted this (if I remember correctly). Mine is a '48.

I'm in desperate need of the variable line spacer button that threads on to the rod (located in the center of the left side platen knob) for my Clipper. I'd imagine one from a Sterling, Silent, or Silent-Super would work just as well. Please contact me if you have one for sale. Thanks in advance!

I'm kind of late to the party here, but I'll throw my hat into the ring.
I've been very surprised at the sheer number of negative reviews on SGW considering the luck I've had with them. I've purchased everything from motorcycle accessories, to guitars, to -more recently- typewriters. Another user suggested that prices are often inflated, and I would have to agree-- certain typewriters will sell for double or triple what I've seen them go for locally. This might be because of the benevolence of some folks... perhaps they feel like they're offering up charity yet getting something in return. Then again, maybe people just get caught up in the heat of the moment (ie. bidding war).
Of the couple of typewriters I've ordered, both were reasonably priced: a '69 Olivetti Studio 45 with original case and documentation ($75), and a 1939 Remington Model 5 ($35). Both are also in good cosmetic condition considering their age, and -perhaps most importantly- function well.
I wouldn't hesitate to look to SGW for your next typewriter purchase; I'd simply caution you to be sensible and realistic with your expectations... understand that any machine you purchase could require substantial repair, adjustment, and a great deal of elbow grease in order to function properly. If this doesn't deter you, bid away!

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but this topic really hits home, and I want to let you know you're not alone-- I feel your pain.
I just purchased a Silent-Super from FB Marketplace that was virtually pristine. It arrived yesterday with a crushed case, and enough damage done to the front panel/chassis that the space bar wouldn't operate. I thought it would've made the five-hour trip without incident, but I guess I was wrong. Next time I'll take a road trip and pick it up myself!
| Maintenance & Repairs » Royal Quiet De Luxe: Drawband Length? » 11-8-2021 22:20:02 |
You can disregard this! I futzed with the Quiet De Luxe this evening and fashioned a 13" drawband from some heavy leader line. Works like a charm!

Kind of sad to see the Royal name resurrected and attached to these purported pieces of garbage!

I've got an early 50's Royal Quiet De Luxe (picked up for the princely sum of $15 from a thrift store in the po-dunk town of Smelterville, ID); while it's in excellent cosmetic condition, it has a broken drawband. Is there a typical/recommended length when it comes to drawbands, or does it vary significantly from machine to machine? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for chiming in, Phil; I sure appreciate you taking the time to do so. Fortunately the Underwood is still able to function as it sits, but it would be nice to return it to its former glory.

Hey, ladies and gents. I've got a 1946 Underwood Noiseless 77 that works wonderfully with the exception of the linespace/carriage return lever, which doesn't recoil when pressed. From diagrams I've seen, it appears as though there ought to be a miniature torsion spring in there. Not having the dimensions or specs of this spring (wire diameter, arm length, etc.) makes it very difficult to procure another. I know it's a long shot, but I was hoping maybe this was a weak spot of the machine and that perhaps someone else has already done the hard job of tracking down a replacement. Thanks!
