If you still have the original ribbon and it is one colour you can try and re-ink it. I have done it in the past by taking all the ribbon out from from a spool and spray WD40 on it. Once it is soaked, after about a couple of hours, I would put it back in the spool wiping gently the excess ink with a kitchen towel as it goes in the spool. It does work, I mean, it is a quick fix and not professional whatsoever, but it does the job and it will work.

It might come from a Halda 7 from 1956, they extend but they don´t fit as paper rests.

I have a basic question. How do you know when you are reaching the end of a line of type so you don't end up with half a word at the end?

Underwoods have an arrow in the carriage pointing to a ruler on the body of the machine that will tell you exactly how many characters you have left to the margin, very visual. If you are touch typing you better fix that bell, and count how many characters you have from the ding to the end.

My Erika 42 was well stuck to the base with the 4 spikes that thetypewriterman is mentioning, no screws. The spikes have ball ends and the rubber feet have to pop out from them. I would pull first the front side, been very careful as the front part has no metal structure and pulling only from the plastic front it is a bit risky but you will have more leverage in the same time. It probably wont come easily, dried rubber and lack of lubrication been the reason so you might want to have another extra pair of hands holding the base of the case.

I think typewriter model is as beautiful as a bad typer ;)  I almost choked when you called silky! The one I had at least was quite bad, maybe it was abused in the past by a clumsy typist, but my feeling was that the materials and the building tolerances were the cause of not giving the best results. In a way it felt a bit more like the Optima Elite 3, very nice looking, but a bit raw and basic, absolutely nothing to do with the smoothness of a Olympia SM series or an Olivetti 44 for example.

When the letters on a page lose the idiosyncratic appearance that screams it was created by a typewriter, it loses all of its charm too. If I wanted to be as efficient as possible, I would stick to my computer. Typing on a manual (or electric) machine is more about the experience and how that experience changes the way I work; and type imperfections from using material ribbons is a constant, and desirable reminder of that.

So if the print "doesn´t scream typewriter" is a bad experience? I find this quite simplistic, but to each its own. I find the experience with both materials pleasant, regardless the material that the ribbon is made of. The quality of the print is a bonus when you use carbon ribbons, I don´t understand why on earth would someone rather type on a computer instead of using carbon ribbons on a typewriter.  I personally buy all sorts of new typewriter ribbons when I find then on the wild, you never know when you will need them, they are cheap and usually dry.  But when it comes to carbon are not damaged at all and it is not necessary to reink it or anything, just put it on and ready to go!

I have changed them as well, not a professional by any means, but I would say they were slightly thinner, probably between 3 and 4 mm, not a big deal, easy, cheap and made with the finest material: got to a hardware store  ;)  and find rubber gaskets for plumbing that are around that size.

You are going to get your 12 typewriters too quick and then what?! ;) Nice machine this one, I had one but for some reason I didn´t fall in love with it. I like the heaviness of the older models I guess.
