Mary Robinette Kowal, president of Science Fiction Writers of America and a typewriter collector, gave me a little piece of her website last month to talk about My Favorite Bit about writing "The Light Years," my debut novel from Angry Robot Books.

Coincidentally, my favorite bit about that process was that I used typewriters for the first draft of the book.

I did a Type-In in Manchester, NH a few years ago. It was a quirky and new thing, so I gave the local newspaper a call and got them to do an advance. It helped get the word out.

Typewriter friends, it has been awhile. I got busy, changed careers, and fell off the Typosphere. However, I just set up a new typewriter shop in my stepson's old bedroom, and I hope to be back full force. I have missed this place.

In the meantime, Angry Robot Books (UK) has just unveiled the cover of my debut novel (first-drafted on an Olympia SM9), which is coming off the presses in February 2020.

Yours in the revolution,

I've ended up without the time or brain space for a novel, so I've been poking along with as many short stories as I can manage. Based on my math, I'm about to around 30,000.

My most recent toe-stubbing experience involved a Model 5 Underwood, rusted solid, a gift from a well-meaning friend. But even in death it was more powerful than my flesh and bone.

Which typewriter, do you suppose, would be the worst to stub your toe on in the dark?

KatLondon,

I got the carriage off courtesy of a helpful photo tutorial posted on the Yahoo group. I got it back on, too, but it didn't solve my problem. My lovely 22 is currently in pieces in a box.

I have a 10 as well, same issue as Uwe's. I wonder why the right side gets more wear than the left.

The Kickstarter, by the way, is $80 away from being funded, with four days to go. It's pretty exciting. She's had orders from all across the country.

In for NaNoWriMo. It will mean prying myself out of bed at 4:30 a.m. for awhile, but there's no better way to produce a big chunk of text in a short time.
