I just checked, and I have one of those!! (Groma Kolibri).  I bought it in Berlin as a present to myself when I had my first solo exhibition there.  It really is very flat, good to know that I can hide it under some floorboards...

A friend of a friend came across this nice Russian typewriter and gave it to me as a present... Didn't have cause to use it for a while though and when I opened it recently, was a little bit dismayed to see it growing a lot of mould on the keys so I'll have to clean it with some alcohol.  Lovely typewriter though but amazingly heavy for a 'portable'...

Wow, you're welcome!  Really glad you enjoyed it... I still remember who introduced me to Raymond Chandler, so it's always nice to make a successful recommendation!

Darn, I don't think I've got one typewriter with that key... it looks like it would be very useful in my artwork, I love a good dot-matrix... right, I've got something new to look out for!

Apologies for the poor quality photo but this was just taken on my phone in a dark studio...

Hi folks,  I just wanted to share this picture of two new spool nuts that my step-dad very kindly machined for me.  He's a keen amateur horologist so has a watch-maker's lathe, and I thought he'd be up for the job.  The nuts are for an Arabic Olivetti that my bio-dad gave me as a present, which was just missing the spool nuts.  I gave my step dad one from another Olivetti to use as a pattern, and they work a charm... I just owe him a slap-up meal now at the Dog & Bell in Deptford, those were the terms...

Well, if your travels bring you to south east London, the best place to pick up an inexpensive typewriter is Deptford Market (Wed, Fri & Sat), where you can normally pick one up for £3-£10...  I've had to sell seven of mine recently as I was running out of space.

Thanks a lot, that's very nice to hear.  Have a go yourself!  I think I'm really a frustrated writer, but I feel I can only work out these frustrations aesthetically... As Capote said about On The Road - "That's not writing - that's typing"...

My interest in typewriters stems from a romantic notion of writers like Hemingway, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler hammering away at these glass-topped keys, and Hollywood screenwriters re-writing draft after draft of classic film noir throughout the '40s and '50s.

Hey Teeritz, it's a bit old-hat now but here's a portrait I made of Dashiell Hammett on the typewriter about seven years ago... I guess I am always partial to a little noir...  I guess it works best if you see it from a distance, apologies for the poor photo...
