Maintenance & Repairs » Wanted: Brother JP-3 service manual regarding escapement settings » 10-4-2023 19:40:22 |
Ted Munk was immensely helpful with the escapement manual pages. The culprit was a misaligned Pawl lever and a lot of bad settings with the adjustment screws. It took several hours but I got it working fine. After I address a few more minor issues, I think I will have a decent typer.
Maintenance & Repairs » Wanted: Brother JP-3 service manual regarding escapement settings » 06-4-2023 13:51:00 |
I have a Montgomery Ward Signature 513(JP-3) that I am attempting to fix the escapement. This has 3 eccentric screw settings, 2 in on the front plate and 1 in the rear that is unable to be accessed unless the whole escapement is removed. Would love to know what sequence and settings that a manual might offer as this is one of the most frustrating tasks that I have encountered. The carriage either runs free or is totally locked...can't find a happy medium. All parts appear ok as there is no evidence of missing or broken parts. I have been playing with this for weeks and am not getting anywhere. I got this through SGW so don't know its history. Hint: When I received the typewriter the drawband was not attached. So, if anyone could share the escapement chapter of the manual, that would be greatly appreciated.
Maintenance & Repairs » Montgomery Ward Signature 513 (Brother JP-3) Flying Carriage Issue » 09-3-2023 15:01:40 |
This is a Brother JP-3 that is a lot bigger than most Brothers and I am guessing somewhat rare. I got this from SGW cheap and I suspected some issues but this flying carriage issue has me baffled. I am at an impasse as to what the problem is, as I have removed the escapement assembly (with a lot of difficulty), cleaned all parts very thoroughly...nothing appears, to me, at least to be missing, that includes all screws, nuts and springs. Space bar ,key press and backspace will secure the carriage but otherwise not. The star wheel gear is definitely engaged in the carriage rail. There are 3 adjustment screws with lock nuts...I have played with them at different settings but so far no success.
I am hoping someone who has worked on this type of machine can offer some advice and guidance. It could be something simple that I am missing.

Yes it pivots back, but beware the plastic is brittle with age and it can break...it happened to me.
Maintenance & Repairs » The letter "a" uneven on three of my typewriters...Solutions? » 18-12-2022 09:55:19 |
I think this is a common problem and I have seen videos of Dwane Jenson fixing this with a special tool that adjusts typebars that is very rare and would be expensive to buy. The typewriters in question are very good performers: The SCM Classic, the SCM Galaxie 12 and a Remington Quiet-Riter. The typebars have to be reformed a tiny fraction in order for it to be even. The Classic also has an "e" key that drops a little too so that if I type the word "weary" it comes out a bit wavey. I could live with it and just accept that it is a characteristic of their uniqueness. Or is there another tool or way of bending the typebars? I have tried it with small pliers, and nothing moved. Any thoughts?
Type Talk » Dick Cavett typed on his old show (shown on Decades TV) » 05-11-2022 12:39:54 |
I googled it and looked on YouTube but no luck...it was interesting to watch. Valarie Harper and Edward Teller were the main guests. Maybe that might help someone locate the whole episode. It had to be from his first show on ABC from the early 70's(?)
Type Talk » Dick Cavett typed on his old show (shown on Decades TV) » 05-11-2022 07:25:52 |
I was watching an old Dick Cavett show from the '70s and he was bragging how fast he was as a touch typist, and he wanted to prove it to his secretarial staff on live TV. They brought out a big Royal manual and his announcer dictated rather quickly a so-called business letter and Dick was typing at a pretty furious and impressive pace. His result was full of errors but there was enough he got right that it was still impressive. Far faster than I could ever do.
Maintenance & Repairs » Replacement feet for an Adler J5 » 02-10-2022 10:00:41 |
Just thought I would sing the praises of this particular rubber grommet which is a great replacement for the hardened and brittle feet on my J5. I bought a bag of 8 for just $14 off e-bay. It took about 20 minutes to remove the old feet and then reinstall the new feet using soapy water and a screwdriver to wedge them in (which did take a little effort". They work perfectly...no slippage at all.
If you order them, make sure you examine the pictures and size carefully as they offer a large variety of grommets and feet.

I discovered too late that the Typewriter Repair Manual has a host of examples by many manufacturers listed in the back. My particular SCM Coronet Electric has a type slug #86 labeled "Classic Elite".
