Note: The spring that returns the lever back into the original position is out of place (It's located below the minus screw).

Typewriter king, I had a look and tried exercising the lever back and forth. It seems more likely to me that something may be missing or bent and thereby causing the problems. Do you know or have pictures of a reference machine?

colrehogan, Where would the spring be typically located? As I'm currently in the USA, how much would repair shops here typically charge for minor repairs?

The main problem here is that the mechanism doesn't hook/interact properly with the cog connected to the platen. This problem also causes the lever not to fully return to the side of the typewriter and it is impossible to store it in the travel case.

I've recently bought a Remington Noiseless 7 and have been testing it when it arrived. However, pushing the carriage return lever doesn't seem advance to the next line even though I fiddled around with the spacing settings. Here's some pictures.

I use methylated spirits to clean the metal segments of the typewriter and am always vigilant when working near the paintwork after an incident with a crinkle finish.

By the way, has anyone had experience using rubbing alcohol (a.k.a. isopropyl alcohol) for clean the typewriter parts?

If I were starting afresh but keeping one typewriter, I would keep my Torpedo 15a. I find that the touch and type quality is real nice even though you have to look after it well.

I suspect the problem lies in the typewriter ribbon your using. Some ribbons which I have bought and used has caused a similar effect on paper just as yours. Try reusing your old ribbon by spraying a little WD-40 and compare the results to check whether the problem lies with the typewriter or the ribbon.

It is definitely not normal that you are able to smudge the ink from the paper several days after. The ink should have dried within an hour or so.

1) For my portables, I would write on a table or on my lap. (I don't use a standard yet as I have been putting off doing up my Royal KMM)
2) Nothing but silence, except the clickety-clacking of the typewriter.
3) I normally sit down and write when I'm winding down in the evening.
